چکیده

A main distinguishing feature of a wireless network compared with a wired network is its broadcast nature, in which the signal transmitted by a node may reach several other nodes, and a node may receive signals from several other nodes simultaneously. Rather than a blessing, this feature is treated more as an interference-inducing nuisance in most wireless networks today (e.g., IEEE 802.11). The goal of this paper is to show how the concept of network coding can be applied at the physical layer to turn the broadcast property into a capacityboosting advantage in wireless ad hoc networks. Specifically, we propose a physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme to coordinate transmissions among nodes. In contrast to “straightforward” network coding which performs coding arithmetic on digital bit streams after they have been received, PNC makes use of the additive nature of simultaneously arriving electromagnetic (EM) waves for equivalent coding operation. PNC can yield higher capacity than straightforward network coding when applied to wireless networks. We believe this is a first paper that ventures into EM-wave-based network coding at the physical layer and demonstrates its potential for boosting network capacity. PNC opens up a whole new research area because of its implications and new design requirements for the physical, MAC, and network layers of ad hoc wireless stations. The resolution of the many outstanding but interesting issues in PNC may lead to a revolutionary new paradigm for wireless ad hoc networking.

Synchronization Analysis in Physical Layer Network Coding

Physical-layer Network Coding (PNC) makes use of the additive nature of the electromagnetic (EM) waves to apply network coding arithmetic at the physical layer. With PNC, the destructive effect of interference in wireless networks is eliminated and the capacity of networks can be boosted significantly. This paper addresses a key outstanding issue in PNC: synchronization among transmitting nodes...

Practical throughput analysis for two-hop wireless network coding

Network coding (NC) has been regarded as a promising technology for throughput improvement in wireless networks, so a thorough understanding on the possible throughput gain from using NC is essential for the application of such technology. Available studies of throughput gain from NC, which mainly focus on only coding sub-layer or both MAC layer and coding sub-layer but largely neglect the prim...

Exploring the Security Capabilities of Physical Layer Network Coding

In wireless networks, the bandwidth is considered one of the most scarce and valuable resources. The physical layer network coding (PNC) technique encourages strategically picked senders to interfere so that the destination nodes can leverage the network level information to recover the signals. PNC can yield higher capacity than network layer network coding when applied to wireless networks. H...

A Physical Layer Scheme in Two-Way Relay Networks with Soft Network Coding

The previous schemes are introduced, including traditional network coding (NC) scheme, physical-layer network coding (PNC) scheme, soft network coding (SNC) scheme and pseudo physical-layer network coding (PPNC) scheme. As an improved scheme of PNC, PPNC does not need synchronization mechanism, however its BER performance gets worse due to the hard decision applied on the relay node. The new pr...
